Location: The SuperiorLife Technology Zone Consists of six northwest counties in Wisconsin. Iron, Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Burnet and Washburn counties make up the zone, which was designated by the Governor in June of 2002.
SuperiorLife is one of eight technology zones in Wisconsin.
What is a Technology Zone: The zone was created to promote high technology businesses. New businesses and expanding businesses can apply for tax credits based their ability to create jobs and investment. The tax credits are for three years, but there is an option to extend the credits for an additional two years. A local board and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce certify the business. Eligible businesses will use advanced technology in their production processes, systems or equipment.
Technology Support: A regional training network is in place for technology-based employers who desire customized technology-based employee training. Land is available for expansion and development of technology based businesses with existing municipal and technology infrastructure. Businesses also have access to the Wisconsin Rural Enterprise Fund and other loan guarantee programs.

- Computer Software
- Medical
- Energy

How does a business receive technology zone tax credits: The business can claim the credits by submitting an annual form to the Department of Commerce. They will in turn issue a verification, which is attached to Wisconsin income tax returns.
How will technology zone credits be calculated: A formula will be used that projects income, sales and property taxes; the average wage of the new jobs created as a result of the project and private investment. There are also some additional factors that can be considered; such as the extent and nature of the technology involved, will the business help generate additional businesses and is research and development involved in the new project.
How much will the tax credits be: depending on the formula, the new business would fit into one of three tiers. The highest tier would give credits on 100 percent of the projected taxes. The second tier would give credits on 75 percent and the lowest tier would give credits on 50 percent.
Reaching your goal: Although the job creation and investment projections at the beginning of the project are not tied to the tax credits for the three-year program, they are very important at the end of the technology zone designation. If the business reached it’s goal of job creation and investment over the three-year period, the Department of Commerce can extend the tax credit program for another two years. So it is beneficial to be realistic when you are initially applying.
