All Terrain Vehicle Operation in Wisconsin

The All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Registration Application must be validated prior to operation of the machine. ATV Registration Online – a quick and convenient way to renew your registration with a credit card (Visa or MasterCard). There is an additional $1.00 for this service. ATV owners who renew online can also print the validation receipt that will allow them to operate their ATV while they wait for the new registration certificate and decals. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Trail Pass

Wisconsin law requires those who use the Wisconsin ATV trails to display either Wisconsin registration or an ATV trail pass. Funds from this program will be designated for use as trail aids and related costs to enhance all Wisconsin ATV recreation. The trail pass may be purchased online at the Online Licensing Center, over the counter at any license sales location, or by phone at 1-877-945-4236.

  • The $35.00 non-resident trail use pass is valid from July 1st through June 30th.
  • An ATV trail pass is required to operate an ATV.
  • The trail pass must be permanently affixed by its own adhesive in a highly visible location on the forward half of the ATV.
  • Once affixed, the sticker may not be removed or transferred to another ATV.

When used safely and wisely an ATV can provide a source of fun and family recreation. When used unwisely by an untrained, inexperienced operator, an ATV can be very dangerous. With safety in mind, an ATV can be a useful tool for work and a great means of exploring the outdoors.

It’s the responsibility of all ATV operators to make the sport a safe one. Take an ATV Safety Course.

Winter ATV Trails

Any snowmobile trail posted with both ATV and Snowmobile signs are open to ATV's in the winter. Also, ATV trail riding is allowed only as long as the average daily temperature is less than 30 degrees, due to the fact that ATV's have the potential to do much greater damage to the trails during warming conditions. We must have a spirit of cooperation if we are to continue to develop a multi-use trail system for our visitors. Iron County trails are closed for a few weeks during the spring breakup period. During this time, spring trail maintenance takes place.
